What If He Lets Her Go, Part Two

November 30th 2006 20:00
Iteration 06

Hopper is dressed before Rita wakes up. He tells her he has a witness to protect and that she'll get hurt, but if he protects her, then he can't solve the case. She tells him he needs to solve the case and by doing so, that will protect the witness. He hadn't thought of that. He leaves, telling her that if Chad calls, to talk to him.

He stops across the street from the coffee shop and calls the woman who nealry gets hit. He pretends to be someone from her office and he gets her to skip the break, thereby saving her from injury without having to stop.

Hopper gets the package from his apartment and the viewpoint shifts to the interior of the bad guys' car. The chief bad guy hangs up his phone and the other guy asks if "he" was mad about the guy in the tub (we haven't seen a guy in a tub...will this matter later?). They chat about prices in the neighborhood and Hopper slips in the back seat.

The bad guys pretend not to know who he is at first, then they call the Mastermind. When Hopper takes the phone to talk to him, a fight begins. Several shots are fired, amazingly missing everyone in the car, then they drive away and throw Hopper out of the car. Chief Bad Guy needs to call the Mastermind and let him know what happened, but Hopper has his phone.

Hopper goes to Baxter's house. At first, Baxter denies that he knows the girl. Hopper finds her upstairs and finds out that Garza is the one who told her to call him. The Mastermind's phone rings and Hopper answers. Baxter is calling the Mastermind. Now we know for sure he's dirty.

But there's no time for Hopper to get information out of Baxter because Damien's goons are there. The goons shoot the girl and put Hopper and Baxter into the trunk of their car. Now they have time to talk. It turns out that Baxter has only been dirty a few days. The Latin Disciples are getting into contract killings and Damien knows names, but Baxter doesn't know how that ties to Garza or Hopper. Baxter justifies his actions by saying that Damien is the bad guy and he's getting what he deserves.

The woman's name was Eva Reese and Baxter met her at the courthouse a few weeks ago. She worked for Garza, but before this line of questioning gets far enough, the Chief Bad Guy shoots the goons and takes Baxter out of the trunk. He knocks out Hopper.

When Hopper wakes up, he finds a gun next to him and the trunk ajar. He climbs out into the parking structure where Damien took him in the last iteration. Baxter is dead in the driver's seat and Hopper realizes he is probably holding the murder weapon. He runs.

Meanwhile, Chad goes to the hospital and talks to Rita. She thinks back to Hopper's words that morning and goes with him. She runs into Jen at the station and they chat for a moment. We find out that Hopper and his mom don't talk much. Chad makes a comment about "a real tight family". Both women give him an annoyed look.

Spivak and Troy question Rita. They bring up something in Rita's past, but Chad stops them before we find out anything. He tells them they can drop that line of questioning or she will leave with him.

Chad drives Rita home and offers to stay on her couch. He says the only plans he had for that evening were to meet a guy at a bar (!) and he can reschedule. Rita lets him come up.

Hopper phones from the street below to make sure she's okay. He knows she and Chad are getting along well and the hurt is on his face. Rita tells him she loves him and he answers back. She wants to know when she will see him again. He is sure he will see her again tomorrow. Of course, only us viewers know the irony behind that remark.

Hopper's phone rings one more time. It's Andrea and she tells him she's done something terrible. We see her and she's standing on a balcony. On the ground below is a man, but I don't recognize him.

Can't wait to find out what happens next.

What If He Lets Her Go, Part One

November 27th 2006 22:18
The second episode (technically the third) starts off with a nice summary of the previous episodes for an intro. The intro reviewed clues, as well as reiterating that Hopper keeps the injuries and memories from the day before.

Iteration 05

Hopper wakes up and rushes into the bathroom, for once without tripping on his gun belt. Just a little blood has seeped from his shoulder wound. He wraps it up while Rita watches the morning news.

He comes out of the bathroom and asks Rita to take the day off work with him. When she refuses, he breaks the palm plate (sneakily) and promises to make it up to her. She relents and agrees to take the day off with him. She wants to go to Mexico, Rosarita Beach, where there's a great lobster shack and cheap beer.

Hopper does a quick turn to stop at the coffee shop and save the woman's life. He tells her he's a police officer and he's talking potential witnesses. She insists she didn't see anything, so he knows he has an in. He presses her and gets quite a bit of information about her: address, cell phone, the fact that Judge Nitzberg is her supervisor.

While he's talking to the woman, Rita receives a suspicious phone call. She tells the caller she can't talk, she can't do it, please stop calling her.

When the bus hits the woman's car, Rita rushes out to help the injured victims. Hopper tells her he'll pick her up at the hospital after the gets the package.

He opens his mailbox and finds the package. The bad guys are watching him with their camera. He opens the package and finds an hourglass and nothing more. He notices the bad guys and recognizes them from before. He yells at them, asking if the hourglass is what they want. At first, the bad guys don't think he could have made them, then they drive quickly away. Hopper throws the hourglass at the fleeing vehicle.

Chad shows up at the hospital and tells Rita about the murder of Garza. He tells her they want to talk to her at the police station, but she doesn't have to go. At that moment, Hopper puts a gun in Chad's back and tells Rita she needs to come with him. After several seconds of discussion, Hopper leaves and Rita stays, but she doesn't go with Chad, either.

Hopper tracks down Andrea at a bar. He tells her he already knows about the offer from IA. He tells her about the hourglass and asks her to trace incoming calls to his phone. She finds out that the phone call came from Baxter's phone. Baxter is the U. S. Attorney who asked Hopper to help him with the Latin Disciples.

Andrea and Hopper go to Baxter's house and find a woman in the pool, shot in the back. Andrea starts to think that too much is going on and she tells Hopper to run, she can't keep going. We see more hostility between Andrea and Hopper. She is angry that he kept so many secrets from her.

Spivak and Troy taunt Chad about his inability to bring Rita in, and the fact that she's seeing his ex-partner. There seems to be a bit of competition over who will get Andrea's cooperation.

Chad returns to the hospital and offers to take Rita home and make sure she's okay. He offers to check her place, but she turns him down. When she leaves the car, he gets a call from Buck, the chief bad guy, asking him to meet him at a bar.

Hopper is inside, also to check on her. They argue over the day, over Chad, and she asks him to leave.

Outside, Damien's two goons pick him up and drive him to an abandoned parking structure. They beat Hopper for a little while, then Damien threatens Hopper. He tells him about the last guy he knew who snitched on someone. Apparently, he got more territory, more production, and he's quite the guy. Damien's motive for selling out wasn't to turn good. He mentions deals going down that he is not a part of because of the safe house fiasco. Hopper wants to know more, but Damien says he hasn't earned that.

Bumps and knocks come from the trunk of a car. It's Baxter. Damien says one of them will die. Hopper promises to find out who sold him out if he keeps them alive. Damien shoots Baxter and tells Hopper to get busy.

Iteration 05 ends, but the episode continues.

What If They Run

November 24th 2006 16:00
The second episode was shown immediately following the Pilot episode.

Iteration 03

Hopper is in Rita's bedroom watching her sleep. She wakes up and he tells her he loves her. She sees his mood and is confused.

The scene changes and Hopper is driving Rita up the coast to meet her mother. Some cars pull onto the highway and he remembers them from the previous iterations. They cut him off men get out of the cars. He accelerates through their roadblock and fires on them as they fire on him. One of the bad guys goes down and Hopper is hit in the shoulder. He drives on, then pulls to the side of the road. He stand in the center and fires at the pursuing car, killing driver and passenger. Rita is stunned and frightened. They drive on.

Back at the roadblock, the Mastermind (who is apparently not the mastermind) is talking on the phone to someone. He says, "We're way past framing him now, sir." He hangs up and the bad guys decide to make it look like a murder-suicide with Hopper and Rita. One of the bad guys asks why "they" chose Hopper. The Mastermind says it's better not to ask.

Rita asks Hopper what just happened. He starts to tell her about the previous iterations, but realizes she won't believe him. They stop at a store for her to buy things to fix up his shoulder. While she's in the store, he calls Andrea using Rita's phone. He tells her that Spivey and Troy will try to flip her against him and he asks her not to do it, he's being framed. She hangs up on him.

A highway patrolman stops Rita, noticing that she has a lot of blood on her dress. She tells him it's a dog that's been hit on the highway and she's buying the stuff for it. Hopper points his gun at the patrolman and handcuffs him out of sight of the store.

They get a hotel room and Hopper explains to Rita the basics of what's happening. She gets the bullet out and wraps up his shoulder. Rita asks if he might have been given a hallucinatory drug in the injection he received. He insists that it's all true and he lets slip that she was killed before. Rita seems to believe him at last. She tells Hopper a story about a dog that was hurt by the side of the road that she wanted to help, but Chad didn't want in the car. Just a bit of characterization for Chad...

Meanwhile, Chad Shelten shows Andrea the evidence he has against her in his job in Internal Affairs. She gets pulled out of the interview by Spivak and Troy, just as Hopper warned her. They play the eighth message from Hopper's answering machine to her and ask if she knows what it means. She says no and she tells them she hasn't spoken to Hopper since yesterday.

Chad Shelten and his assistant talk. His assistant tells him that Andrea was speaking to Rita immediately before entering his office. Chad relays the information to Spivak, except he confirms that Rita is dating Hopper.

Andrea calls Rita's cellphone while Spivak, Troy, and Chad are listening in. They get a fix on the phone and head for the hotel. Spivak says he thinks they should have brought Swan. Troy sighs and assures him he's doing the right thing.

The bad guys are headed for the same hotel, getting their guns ready.

Andrea enters the room. She's wired, but through non-verbal communication, she lets him know she's on his side. She tells him to take her hostage.

Outside the hotel, the bad guys arrive, put gloves on, and get their guns out. The cops watching the hotel realize something is very wrong and get ready for a fight.

A gun battle ensues and Hopper, Rita, and Andrea escape out the hotel window, but in trying to help the surrounding police officers, Andrea is killed.

Rita and Hopper drive away and keep driving long after the sun sets. Hopper manages to stay awake until 6:17am, but then he is in Rita's bed again for Iteration 04.

Iteration 04

It's 6:17am and Rita rolls over. When she wraps her arm around Hopper, she finds a pool of blood. His gunshot wound from the previous iteration is there and is no longer wrapped. She rushes him to the hospital.

When Hopper wakes, his sister is sitting next to him. She assures him Rita is okay. He tells Jen she has to get the kids safe, but she tells him he lost a lot of blood and he's confused.

Spivak and Troy show up at the hospital and tell him he's under arrest, but Rita tosses them out. They handcuff him to the bed. In the hall, Jen scolds them for treating another cop like that and reminds them that her and Hopper's father was a cop. Rita provides Hopper with an alibi for the entire night, but can't answer how he got shot.

Meanwhile, Andrea is in Chad's office. He shows her the evidence he has against her. Photos of her handing cash to Danny Yan, a criminal. Bank statements saying she withdrew large amounts of money shortly before each payment. She looks distressed. Chad's assistant calls him out of the room and he returns to tell her that Hopper is accused of murder. Andrea immediately says he didn't do it, but Chad says, "Anybody's capable of anything."

Back at the hospital, Hopper again fills Rita in on the previous iterations. She helps him escape. During their escape, Hopper sees the woman who was nearly hit by the bus lying on a gurney. Hopper takes a gun, recorder, and radio from Troy and handcuffs him to a railing at the hospital. Troy tells him he should just make it easy and turn himself in. Hopper accuses him of planting the gun in his closet. Troy looks confused and says, "Who said anything about a gun?"

Hopper monitors the police radio and listens to Troy's case notes. His answering machine messages are on there. He decides to go to his apartment and look for the package, but there is a police officer watching it. Rita and Hopper sit outside. She suggests they just run, but Hopper says it wouldn't solve anything. He is sure he needs to figure out the murder before the day will stop repeating.

In a funny moment, we (along with Rita) discover that their first date was actually a stakeout. Heh.

Rita finally lures the cop away from the building, but there is no package. Chad calls her on her cell and Hopper throws it into the street, thinking it is being traced.

The scene switches to Chad as he hangs up. He's not tracing her; he's sitting alone in a bar. One of the hitmen sits down with him and it's clear they know each other.

The episode ends there. It's night already, so there's not much more of Hopper's iteration left. We'll see what happens on the next episode.

Pilot

November 23rd 2006 19:00
Day Break is a new ABC tv show, taking the place of Lost during its hiatus. The premise is that a cop relives a particular day of his life over and over. Presumably, this will last until he gets it right, figures out who the bad guys are, fixes everything. It's a similar idea to the movie Groundhog Day, starring Bill Murray, but where the movie was a comedy, the television series is a drama.

Taye Diggs plays Detective Brett Hopper, falsely accused of murdering an Assistant District Attorney. An ensemble of talented actors keep the tension and mystery going. A well thought out plot and the occasional action scene provide for gripping drama. I recommend this one and I might be watching it even if Lost wasn't on
