Day Break TV - Day Break, a new ABC television drama on Wednesday nights

More Thoughts on "What If They're Stuck"

December 11th 2006 05:48
At the end of the episode, Chad takes a chance that Hopper's ramblings about repeating the day are real. He tells Hopper the file is on the front seat of his car. With all the tension and rivalry between the two men, this is a significant emotional happening.

Possibly, like Andrea waking up one morning full of hope for Eddie and her own life, Chad will find his attitude towards Hopper changing. We'll see this week.

I just watched "Groundhog Day" which is a good comparision to this movie. There is a scene in "Groundhog" where the Andie McDowell character takes seriously the possibility that Phil (Bill Murray) is reliving the day over and over. So she says to him something like, "You treat this experience as a curse, but maybe it's an opportunity." It is after this that Phil starts trying to do good and improve himself.

Similarly, in this episode of "Day Break" Chad asks Brett why he feels this is happening to him, and Brett says it feels like a punishment, but clearly it is an opportunity to set things right with his family and friends, even with the memory of his father. Though, Chad doesn't say anything to put Brett on that path, I think Chad was thinking it. And Brett is always on the verge of getting the idea anyway. The day will stop repeating when he has solved the mystery and fixed or otherwise resolved his relationships with his sister and her husband and probably Chad, too.

A big difference between this show and "Groundhog" is that this isn't a comedy. Yet in the last episode they aired Chad is talking to his mother on the phone and he says, "We seem to be having this same conversation over and over." Little does he know!

The writers did a good job of inserting the occasional in-joke. I know I laughed at least once per episode.
