Day Break TV - Day Break, a new ABC television drama on Wednesday nights

Why Day Break Was Cancelled

December 19th 2006 03:06
ABC cancelled Day Break because numbers kept slipping. It started out with a decent showing, with nearly eleven million people watching the two-hour pilot episode, but lost half its audience by the third episode.

Only 4.5 million viewers tuned in last week. That sounds like a lot of people to me, but ninety-eight shows last week had more viewers.

Reruns of According to Jim and George Lopez will air in Day Break's spot.

Several news outlets have reported that ABC.com will definitely finish the season by showing a new episode of Day Break each Wednesday. If that's correct (and we'll know in two days), then I'll keep this blog active, so stay tuned.

Updated 04 Feb 2007: Day Break is now online.

Thanks, Sisi. We can cry a little together, then go shopping. Shopping cures a lot of things.

This is total BS. I loved that show and was looking forward to it each week. IMO it was equal to the quality of 24. The acting was great. And the story was rich.

I feel violated. If they wanted to pull the plug like this they should have had a better plan for their viewers. This just goes to show how they feel about their "customers" well guess what ABC....I'm not shopping at your channel anymore.

I agree, Anon. I think they should have left it to play out. Can reruns of sitcoms really bring in more than 4.5 million viewers? I'll check on that, of course.

As of tonight, ABC doesn't have a new episode up. I'll try again tomorrow.

How is it known that the "numbers" were slipping. It just started. People were watching - It was very dumb, but predictable that it would be cancelled. It was ten times better than '24'. It is certainly better than 'Desparate Housewives' which was promoted out the wazzu. Now if anything should have been cancelled, Its the deparate ones. And to double up on Jim Balluchi - was torture, and George - it gets to be a bit too much.

It is very disappointing that a good show--Day Break has been yanked out without a proper ending. ABC is not doing their loyal fans any justice. This may very well hurt their overall ratings in all future or current shows. It shows that ALL ABC shows has no responsibility and obligation to do a good job from the beginning to the end. Then why bother to show any interest in ANY ABC shows.

This sucks. I swear, everytime I find a new show that I like, it gets cancelled. This season of Lost wasn't even as good as Daybreak.

I agree with all of the above. If ABC is going to air the rest of the episodes of this show either on broadcast TV or through their website, they should let it be known instead of leaving us all hanging, wondering what is happening. I think whoever pulled the plug on this show deserves to relive the worst day of his life over and over again.

At the bottom of ABC.com there is a line-up of the upcoming week of shows. Next Wed they have Day Break (yeeeaaaaaahhhh!!!!!!!!) in the 10 o'clock slot. Is this for real, or are they just playing with my heartstrings?

What's the lo-down on this net-rumor i hear about abc having legal problems with the show's music which prevent them from making un-aired eps available over the net? Or does it really have to do with abc not wanting to show un-aired eps on the net if they are really going to show them on broadcast? Why not put the show on saturday, BTW? Nothing else does well there anyway.

Comment by Adele

December 25th 2006 05:33
ABC is being pretty tight-lipped about their scheduling decisions. It would be nice to find at least one news article on it. I think the music rights flap is just a rumor. They planned to put Day Break on the net anyway, so all that would have been cleared up long ago.

I don't know for certain, but I think you're right that they won't put un-aired episodes up until they broadcast. And it looks like they will broadcast.

Actually, they aren't putting them on the air. ABC continues to show it's "news" program, "Basic Instinct" instead of "Day Break." Looks like ABC faked everyone out by putting "D-B" on the schedule. Now what kind of f.u.ed game is that?

Comment by Adele

December 28th 2006 04:36
Anon 3:16,

It's a rotten game, in my opinion. They left Day Break on the schedule until last night, then pulled it and replaced it with Primetime. I'm thoroughly annoyed.

The previously aired episodes are no longer on abc.com and it doesn't look like they're going to put the un-aired eps online.

What a dirty trick.

I missed the last 2 episodes due to holiday events and went to abc.com to catch up and found out they are not streaming them anymore!

Did a quick google search with “Daybreak cancelled” not even thinking it was true and found out it was. I thought maybe they were just taking a break to ramp up production that had fallen behind on such an excellent series (as LOST always has to do).

I can’t believe that ABC would get this good of a series to fill in for LOST and then pull it early after such a huge set-up that needs to be continued to gain momentum. It was’nt going to be on that long anyway. Why get dedicated LOST fans to watch this (with the LOST scenes and all) and then screw them by pulling this crap!!

ABC invests all this money into developing these shows (also “The Nine” and “Invasion” which I did not know was cancelled) and then just thows them away? That is crazy and NOT smart. They could get more money if they keep them going at least for the DVD season sets potential.

I know I want “Daybreak” on DVD so I can share this awesome show with my wife (no DVR)!!

What can we do now?

Does ABC really think that repeats of "George Lopez" and "According To Jim" will do better? They certainly will not serve the public and fans of "LOST" and "Daybreak" by any strech.

Good network tv is hard to find and when you do it disappears!

Don't just leave us all hangin' ABC!!

daybreak was the best show on tv and now there filled with reruns of jim and george lopez, like thats better to fill the time...gimme a break....they should of let the customers vote before they pulled it off the air, such a bummer...you kept lost on there way too long, that show is just crazyand so stupid, whose running this networks...i guess its all about numbers but it was a killer show...they should at least show the remaing episodes

Matt B.,

You hit on a topic that confuses me to no end. Why do they take shows off the air that have been paid for already? That boggles my mind.

I think the only thing left to do is wait for the DVD. If you want to tell ABC what you think, you can contact them here. I got an autoreply when I wrote them, but I think it gets tallied in some spreadsheet somewhere.

The repeats got about a half million more viewers this week. I suppose every viewer counts. Next week, two new sitcoms are in the spot.

Anon 00:30,

I'm a big fan of Lost, as you can see from my other blog, but I agree with you that George Lopez and Jim are nothing like Lost or Day Break. They wanted to keep the Lost fans in the viewing hour, but sitcoms won't do that.

I was wondering what the hell happened w/that, and why the new shows weren't up @ abc.com, then just finding out the show is GONE from the site ALTOGETHER? I even SEARCHED for it and it said "no results found."

If ANYBODY learns ANYTHING of the remaining episodes being shown in some capacity, email me: real_g21@hotmail.com

Whoever wrote wrote "...they should of let the customers vote before they pulled it off the air..." inadvertently ran smack into the problem which is that WE VIEWERS are NOT the CUSTOMERS. The Customers are the advertisers who pay the Networks to deliver US VIEWERS to the advertisers. Not that there's anything wrong with that (he said quoting Seinfeld), but it is definitely a drawback to watching network tv (as opposed to, say, HBO where WE ARE the Customers). This is also why the networks will throw away a show that cost a lot of money if it is not pulling in viewers. They throw it away for the benefit of the advertizers who would otherwise complain that they are paying confiscatory ABC advertising rates for a show with UPN demographics.

Another thing this means is that it might be worthwhile to let ABC know that you would be interested in seeing the whole series on DVD, presuming ABC controls the DVD rights. Whoever controls those needs to know that there are customers for such a product--and in that case viewers ARE the customers.

Comment by Adele

December 31st 2006 04:03
You make a good point, Anon 22:37. We aren't the customers.

Network execs can't stand corporate/police corruption revealed in the show Daybreak. Maybe its too close to some truth out there.

Let Taye Diggs fight some middle eastern rag-tag third world terrorist on the show and the ABC execs and their sponsors would be running to the bank singing " Show us the Money"

It's only about money and ratings when it's convenient for those hypocritcal Newtork execs.

DAYBREAK was the best show of the 2006 Fall season!

I just found out Daybreak was cancelled after looking for it every Wedesday. How stupid was that? I am a Lost fan, of course. But other than Lost and Daybreak, I watch virtually no network TV. Why watch the vapid, instantly forgettable trash like According to Jim and George Lopez? Same for UPN and Fox and WB, or whatever it is. By the same token, my demographic is right in their age range and a fairly able consumer, if I may humbly add. I suppose there is no time to waste trying to get my demographic when the advertising is done weekly and they all think it better to catch the dumb 18-49 who probably is more interested in Bud vs. Miller as far as advertising goes. That's a slippery slope for ABC. They'll end up just one of the other you-know-whats pandering for the quick dumb advertising dollar. Meanwhile, I'll stick with original (uninterrupted) premium programming, Netflix and niche programs on PBS, Discovery, OLN and NatGeo, etc.

Message to ABC: Duh. You missed the boat by cancelling one of the smartest, best-acted shows on TV in a long time. Put it out on DVD, please. You'll make a few bucks. Then have fun w/ the Budweiser crowd watching George and Jim. I'll read your obituary in a few years when Discovery buys you from Disney.

I was wondering what happened to Daybreak and am finding out this information for the first time.

I usually don't post on these things, because I don't believe that noone reads em .. but I LOVED THAT SHOW! I work one full time, two part time jobs, and go to school part time and Daybreak was the only show that I made sure that I had time to watch.

They need to bring it back! But checking ABC's website, the show isn't even listed anymore so you can't even watch episodes .. it just *poof!* disappeared.

Now I'm left hanging. Now how are we to know who killed who, when and with what? This is frustrating.

Any word if this is a show that will be picked up by Sci-Fi or USA? I hope someone picks it up and finish producing it. I like the puzzle and of course like usual, I can't figure anything out.

Anon 18:59,

The entire series has been filmed. It hasn't all been posted on the site yet. So far, we've had the six episodes that aired on TV, and now we have four more on the ABC site. Three more episodes have yet to be posted. Hopefully, the full series will unravel all the tangled knots these puzzles produce.

What makes this even worse is the fact that Daybreak had to fill the shoes of Lost, which is not a fair place to start. But George Lopez? W T F? The may as well use re-runs of Bob Saget and America's Home Videos or some other tripe.

ABC - yes, we know it's hard to get used to a show that doesn't pay out as quick as LOST, which, as you know, has turned off many viewers sicne they create too many new questions without answering old ones, which Daybreak deftly mangaed to avoid. But I guess creating 30-second spots about "Who is Kate Going to Chose? Sawer?...or Jaaaaaaack!!!!!" is much easier than selling a temporal mind-phuck cop show. Whatever.

In the final analysis, Daybreak beat the pants of 90% of the TV out there. The fact that its ratings weren't up to the level of Lost is not a fair measuring stick to judge by. That said, sell it to FX or Sc-Fi and let them have some fun. And for the record, I certainly hope you excercise more patience with the American version of Life on Mars when David E. Kelly is done bastardising it for American TV (from the BBC) - that is, if ABC ends up carring it. But since it is ANOTHER temporal time-phuck TV cop show, you may as well drop it before you start it.

Hi, Aaron,

I was really excited when I heard that Life on Mars is coming to America. I watched the first season on BBCA and fell in love with it. I do hope it's done well and it gets a fair shake.

I stopped by your site. I'd heard of some of those upcoming shows, but not all. I'm not sure about the Sarah Connor Chronicles...

Wake up people!! It does not take a whole season to solve the delimas of DayBreak. The TV show Medium essentially dealth with the same deja vu issues in one single episode.

There is no reason to drag this plot on for 13 weeks.

ABC should pull their heads out of their pants! Day Break is a great show. If they're not satisfied with their numbers, then they should sell the show to a network like FOX who won't give up when the number of viewers drops in half - when half still exceeds 4.5 million households.

The show was just starting to establish a base. I'm sure the advertisers aren't very happy with the numbers now.
