Why Day Break Was Cancelled
December 19th 2006 03:06
ABC cancelled Day Break because numbers kept slipping. It started out with a decent showing, with nearly eleven million people watching the two-hour pilot episode, but lost half its audience by the third episode.
Only 4.5 million viewers tuned in last week. That sounds like a lot of people to me, but ninety-eight shows last week had more viewers.
Reruns of According to Jim and George Lopez will air in Day Break's spot.
Several news outlets have reported that ABC.com will definitely finish the season by showing a new episode of Day Break each Wednesday. If that's correct (and we'll know in two days), then I'll keep this blog active, so stay tuned.
Updated 04 Feb 2007: Day Break is now online.

I feel violated. If they wanted to pull the plug like this they should have had a better plan for their viewers. This just goes to show how they feel about their "customers" well guess what ABC....I'm not shopping at your channel anymore.

As of tonight, ABC doesn't have a new episode up. I'll try again tomorrow.

I don't know for certain, but I think you're right that they won't put un-aired episodes up until they broadcast. And it looks like they will broadcast.

It's a rotten game, in my opinion. They left Day Break on the schedule until last night, then pulled it and replaced it with Primetime. I'm thoroughly annoyed.
The previously aired episodes are no longer on abc.com and it doesn't look like they're going to put the un-aired eps online.
What a dirty trick.

Did a quick google search with “Daybreak cancelled” not even thinking it was true and found out it was. I thought maybe they were just taking a break to ramp up production that had fallen behind on such an excellent series (as LOST always has to do).
I can’t believe that ABC would get this good of a series to fill in for LOST and then pull it early after such a huge set-up that needs to be continued to gain momentum. It was’nt going to be on that long anyway. Why get dedicated LOST fans to watch this (with the LOST scenes and all) and then screw them by pulling this crap!!
ABC invests all this money into developing these shows (also “The Nine” and “Invasion” which I did not know was cancelled) and then just thows them away? That is crazy and NOT smart. They could get more money if they keep them going at least for the DVD season sets potential.
I know I want “Daybreak” on DVD so I can share this awesome show with my wife (no DVR)!!
What can we do now?
Does ABC really think that repeats of "George Lopez" and "According To Jim" will do better? They certainly will not serve the public and fans of "LOST" and "Daybreak" by any strech.
Good network tv is hard to find and when you do it disappears!
Don't just leave us all hangin' ABC!!

You hit on a topic that confuses me to no end. Why do they take shows off the air that have been paid for already? That boggles my mind.
I think the only thing left to do is wait for the DVD. If you want to tell ABC what you think, you can contact them here. I got an autoreply when I wrote them, but I think it gets tallied in some spreadsheet somewhere.
The repeats got about a half million more viewers this week. I suppose every viewer counts. Next week, two new sitcoms are in the spot.

I'm a big fan of Lost, as you can see from my other blog, but I agree with you that George Lopez and Jim are nothing like Lost or Day Break. They wanted to keep the Lost fans in the viewing hour, but sitcoms won't do that.

If ANYBODY learns ANYTHING of the remaining episodes being shown in some capacity, email me: real_g21@hotmail.com

Another thing this means is that it might be worthwhile to let ABC know that you would be interested in seeing the whole series on DVD, presuming ABC controls the DVD rights. Whoever controls those needs to know that there are customers for such a product--and in that case viewers ARE the customers.

Let Taye Diggs fight some middle eastern rag-tag third world terrorist on the show and the ABC execs and their sponsors would be running to the bank singing " Show us the Money"
It's only about money and ratings when it's convenient for those hypocritcal Newtork execs.
DAYBREAK was the best show of the 2006 Fall season!

Message to ABC: Duh. You missed the boat by cancelling one of the smartest, best-acted shows on TV in a long time. Put it out on DVD, please. You'll make a few bucks. Then have fun w/ the Budweiser crowd watching George and Jim. I'll read your obituary in a few years when Discovery buys you from Disney.

I usually don't post on these things, because I don't believe that noone reads em .. but I LOVED THAT SHOW! I work one full time, two part time jobs, and go to school part time and Daybreak was the only show that I made sure that I had time to watch.
They need to bring it back! But checking ABC's website, the show isn't even listed anymore so you can't even watch episodes .. it just *poof!* disappeared.
Now I'm left hanging. Now how are we to know who killed who, when and with what? This is frustrating.

The entire series has been filmed. It hasn't all been posted on the site yet. So far, we've had the six episodes that aired on TV, and now we have four more on the ABC site. Three more episodes have yet to be posted. Hopefully, the full series will unravel all the tangled knots these puzzles produce.

ABC - yes, we know it's hard to get used to a show that doesn't pay out as quick as LOST, which, as you know, has turned off many viewers sicne they create too many new questions without answering old ones, which Daybreak deftly mangaed to avoid. But I guess creating 30-second spots about "Who is Kate Going to Chose? Sawer?...or Jaaaaaaack!!!!!" is much easier than selling a temporal mind-phuck cop show. Whatever.
In the final analysis, Daybreak beat the pants of 90% of the TV out there. The fact that its ratings weren't up to the level of Lost is not a fair measuring stick to judge by. That said, sell it to FX or Sc-Fi and let them have some fun. And for the record, I certainly hope you excercise more patience with the American version of Life on Mars when David E. Kelly is done bastardising it for American TV (from the BBC) - that is, if ABC ends up carring it. But since it is ANOTHER temporal time-phuck TV cop show, you may as well drop it before you start it.

I was really excited when I heard that Life on Mars is coming to America. I watched the first season on BBCA and fell in love with it. I do hope it's done well and it gets a fair shake.
I stopped by your site. I'd heard of some of those upcoming shows, but not all. I'm not sure about the Sarah Connor Chronicles...

There is no reason to drag this plot on for 13 weeks.

The show was just starting to establish a base. I'm sure the advertisers aren't very happy with the numbers now.
